The LA Rams have not been sharing details about their their salary cap transactions, it seems.  The last known salary cap figure had the team at an estimated ($33 million) over the cap ceiling. While the details of how the team is shaving money are not currently available to the public, it seems that the organization is not just playing tiddly-winks or waiting for a call back from players or agents.

Oh no, not at all. In fact, the Rams are making progress, albeit in a way that is as yet undisclosed.  Still, all of the details known tie back to the last estimate publicly available had the Rams over the cap by some $33 million.  Today’s figures that were made public by The Athletic’s Greg Auman suggested that the Rams have indeed restructured contracts to the tune of saving $10 million.

It’s a start.

So where did Greg Auman get his figures?  Well, lo and behold, it’s a service that the NFL Player’s Association performs. The NFLPA publishes a daily NFL team salary cap report that details the total and where that falls to the current cap ceiling.  And yes, the information is confirmed.

So what does that mean? Well, the savings comes out to $8,586,443. While that does not translate to one player, after a bit of reverse-engineering of several contracts (Thanks to the tools made available on the Spotrac.com website for the LA Rams) That number aligns closely with restructuring contracts for, say… Andrew Whitworth, Michael Brockers, and Rob Havenstein. (an estimated savings of $8,555,000) from the 2021 salary cap.

Now, that’s just an arithmetic coincidence, but it does illustrate just how the process of reducing the current cap expense is taking shape. Until details are released, confirming which players and how that savings occurred is merely the speculative guesswork that you’ve just seen me perform. But there is worthwhile information here. The LA Rams are a third of the way to break even, and a fourth of the way to afford a qualifying first-round tender offer to Darious Williams.

And that, in the midst of the silence, is absolutely worthy of a loud cheer by LA Rams fans worldwide.
