LA Rams 2021 NFL Draft shopping list continues to grow
By Bret Stuter
The LA Rams need a miracle nearly on par with the feeding of the multitudes. Why so dramatic? well, the Rams organization has fewer picks than needs, and they have a lot of distance to go to clear sufficient salary-cap space. While the NFL rules indicate that the Rams must come in at the $182.5 ceiling by March 17, 2020, at 1:00 pm PT, that isn’t the goal. The team will need money to sign players.
The Rams will need millions to pay six drafted rookies. If the team submits a first-round qualifying tender offer for Darious Williams, that will take $5 million. If the Rams choose to re-sign DWill at market value? It will take more.
For now, the offseason shopping list includes (in no particular order) an offensive center, offensive tackle, tight end, power back, edge rusher, inside linebacker, cornerback(s), perhaps a safety, and even quarterback.
Nine positions, six picks. That is presuming that the Rams won’t double up by drafting twice from the same position. And with too few picks, then the question truly becomes which position gets the all-too-precious day two attention from the draft board.
Will the Rams try to go with the best player/need available with too few picks, risking reaching for a player whose value truly is not there? Or will the Rams trust past decisions and current coaching staff to convert the raw talent on the roster into an NFL championship team on the fly? The Rams tried the on-the-fly method with the defense in 2020, and we all know how that turned out.
