LA Rams TE Gerald Everett is next to go?
By Jay Blucher
The LA Rams have lost safety John Johnson III (agreed to terms with the Cleveland Browns), outside linebacker Samson Ebukam (agreed to terms with the San Francisco 49ers), and long snapper Jake McQuaide (agreed to terms with Dallas Cowboys, story up soon). Now we are all on the edge of our seats, eagerly awaiting the news that will soon be forthcoming about the future of Rams tight end Gerald Everett.
His production will be missed by the Rams. In four seasons playing with the club, the 26-year-old Everett compiled 127 career receptions, with 17 nabs going for 20-plus yards. Everett was also dependably durable, suiting up for 61 of 64 games. A sure-handed, move-the-chains kind of dependable.
Everett is also an attractively priced free agent, especially for a team that runs a lot of two-tight end sets or needs to bring some stability to its tight-end play – Sportrac pegs Everett’s market value at an economically reasonable $7.3 million.
At 6-foot-3 and 240-pounds, Everett embodies what any NFL team could want in a tight end. He can catch a pass, block very well, and even pound the rock occasionally. Historically, he’s been a modestly effective receiver, catching balls thrown his way at a rate of just better than 60 percent.
When he lines up in the backfield, he gives the defense something extra to think about, adding a dash of versatility to the lineup. In other words, his new team can involve Everett in rushing, receiving, pass protection, or run blocking on any given play.
The Rams offense does not exactly feature tight-end play, so his career stats have been somewhat muted in McVay’s offensive packages.
Nevertheless, he will have no shortage of potential suitors eager to ink him to a new deal. The Philadelphia Eagles, Buffalo Bills, Cincinnati Bengals, and Washington Football Team are all short on the position and could use a quality receiver/blocker on their roster right now.
And the WINNER IS? The Seattle Seahawks
That confirms our prediction of a $6 million contract and landing with the Seattle Seahawks. This is a sad farewell, but he will find plenty of opportunities in that Seahawks offense.
