Let’s talk LA Rams explosive offense

The LA Rams‘ long-standing love affair with putting points on the scoreboard ran its course and the romance was all but gone in 2020. While the Rams defense put the clamps on opposing offenses last year, the Rams offense found that the ability to score points does take work.

Of course, that wasn’t the case in 2017 and 2018, when the offense averaged 31.3 points per game. In 2017, the Rams scored 28 touchdowns through the air, and 17 touchdowns on the ground. In 2018, the team chalked up 32 passing touchdowns and 23 rushing scores.  That all began to fade in 2019, when the team found the end zone 22 times through the air, and just 20 times on the ground. in 2020? 20 passing TDs, and 19 rushing TDs.

If I had to find the fastest fix? I’d say that the passing touchdowns route is where the Rams will focus their efforts for 2021.  So far, the moves support all of that. The team has a new quarterback in Matthew Stafford who threw for 26 touchdowns in 2020. The team also added WR DeSean Jackson who, if used correctly, can still move the chains, stretch the defense, and find the end zone.

The 2020 aerial top scorers return with a vengeance for 2021. WR Robert Woods put up six TDs in 2020. Right behind him was the streaky TE Tyler Higbee who scored five times, three scores in one game against the Philadelphia Eagles.  The typical scoring sprees of WR Cooper Kupp, worth 10 TDs in 2019, shrank to just three scores in 2020. So I’m going to spitball guess that Matthew Stafford will work hard to find Kupp in the endzone early.

The Rams lose three touchdowns by the loss of both TE Gerald Everett, the new sinister Seahawk, and WR Josh Reynolds who hopes to launch his next chapter in Tennessee with the Titans. Of course, the Rams planned ahead and already boast WR Van Jefferson, Trishton Jackson, and TE Brycen Hopkins to step up as 2021 perspective scoring additions.

The Rams offense left plenty of points on the table in 2020. If we project that the Rams will put up 28 touchdowns in the air and 20 touchdowns on the ground, the team will be back in the upper echelon of the NFL scoring ranks. Now, the question is whether it’s doable? Well, it’s probably easier than you think.

The Rams left multiple touchdowns on the field in 2020 due to poorly timed turnovers. If the team fixes that alone, they’ll put up more points, as many as 30 more. Factor in a combined impact of Stafford and DeSean Jackson to the Rams offense, and there are 30 more points. With 60 more points help? You bet they will, and that is well within the scope of the Rams offense to achieve as is. If the Rams get a burst of production out of a young player? Just add it to the total.
