New quarterbacks are no sure thing
There is a mystique about players who are drafted early as being a sure thing. A lock. An NFL starter. Each year the build-up is about the same theme, if you believe this guy can be your franchise quarterback, you go get him. And yet, nobody follows up on the carnage of teams who have embraced that strategy.
An interesting fact related to yesterday’s trades...Over the last 10 yrs, the QBs that were traded up for in the top 3 picks include: RG3, Goff, Wentz, Trubisky, Darnold. This is a cautionary tale for the 49ers.

Now, the former offensive coordinator of the Washington Football Team, Kyle Shanahan is making his very own RGIII trade, just nine years later. If history repeats itself, and it very likely could, this could be the beginning of the end of the 49ers’ flash of NFL brilliance.
Rookie quarterbacks face tremendous pressure, a steep learning curve, and must do it all in a new city while trying to make new friends, form new trusts, find a place to live, learn a new playbook, impress new coaches, and interact with an entirely new set of teammates. To prevent that early deer-in-the-headlights effect hindering the team, the 49ers so far are committing to keeping Jimmy G. on the roster in 2021. That will cost the team plenty of salary expense if it’s even true.
