III – 12 personnel package
There is always the risk of setting expectations far too high when a new quarterback arrives in an offense. QB Matthew Stafford, as talented and as fine a quarterback as he is, will not instinctively know where to go with the ball instantly on every play. He will need to retrain himself to fit this LA Rams offense.
So how can the Rams help him adjust? Two tight end sets are a new quarterback’s friend, and the Rams tight end crew appears to be ready and set to go for Stafford. The Rams return the rather productive tight end Tyler Higbee, the blocking tight end Johnny Mundt, and will roll out the redshirted rookie Brycen Hopkins.
Tight end time
Going with a 12 package early in the season will give Stafford more time in the pocket to adjust, add an additional big body target onto the field, and places Stafford into a position of throwing to tight ends, something he has enjoyed so far in his NFL career.
Going to the 12-package early will confuse defenses as they try to quickly determine the new quarterback’s tendencies. Installing some two-tight end looks on offense early will force defenses to load up with bigger body defenders. Then, unleash the bombs to DeSean Jackson, and watch them scramble to find the right sub-packages to handle that.
