I – Go deep with multiple players

The LA Rams want to test defenses deep and have made that crystal clear by adding one of the best deep-threats in the game by the name of Desean Jackson. Of course, the Rams must threaten defenses deep early in the season. After all, part of the strategic addition of DJax is that he forces defenses to commit a safety to cover him in the likelihood of a deep route.

So here’s the thing, he cannot be the only deep threat. Whether the Rams run a tight end down the seam, commit Van Jefferson, or redshirted WR Trishton Jackson, the team needs to go deep even when DeSean Jackson is not on the field.

Downtown offense

One of the missing discussions is the fact that the Rams often had players who are on the roster get separation deep downfield.  I picture Robert Woods as one player whose ability to get open at any level on the football field was tempered by not getting the ball to him. In theory, Stafford will eventually find the range on these guys and make defenses respect the deep ball.

I know that it’s easier to link new production to new players, and the expectation that existing players will generate more production or be used in new ways to exploit other talents is not easy to point to, because by its very nature it truly hasn’t been done before.

This is an LA Rams team that brought back outside linebacker Leonard Floyd and defensive back Darious Williams, tight end Johnny Mundt and offensive lineman Coleman Shelton. The team has added wide receiver, DeSean Jackson. The team traded a bundle to add quarterback Matthew Stafford. So far, most of the analyses have focused upon individuals. But hopefully, this is a first step to illustrate how it may all fit together.

Each year, comments fill with disheartened fans who truly expected the team to spend nearly unlimited funds on big-name free agents. When it doesn’t happen, they are easily discouraged.
The Rams had a top-ranked defense in 2020 after only modest changes. This year the offense hopes to make huge strides with only modest additions. The 2021 NFL Draft and the undrafted players signed afterward, will combine to impact this team’s ability to win in 2021.

The Rams have not had a losing season under head coach Sean McVay. We just outlined seven simple steps required to keep that success going strong in 2021.
