Will the 2021 NFL Draft dominoes fall for the LA Rams?
By Bret Stuter
So the LA Rams have plenty of areas to focus upon in the upcoming 2021 NFL Draft. I won’t declare any position a true need, because using that term suggests that the Rams have no other options on the current roster for that position. They do. And with the number of positions that could and should be addressed in the upcoming draft, there will be a logical choice wherever and whenever the Rams make a selection in the draft.
So now, the last remaining question is, will the draft fall the right way for the Rams? Or more appropriately, will the Rams chart a course through the draft to optimize matching the most talent to the thinnest roster depth, for 2021 and beyond?
Navigation is more appropriate because the NFL draft board is interlinked and interwoven. Each selection made on the draft board forces some level of modification to the players selected afterward. In the 2021 NFL Draft, as many as five quarterbacks will come off the board in round one. That means as many as five players that have positional value to the Rams will fall into round two.
Rams will make waves in the draft
So it makes sense that the LA Rams can affect the same availability based on the players that they choose to remove from the draft. NFL teams tend to choose from the same position group. During the draft, the occurrence is called a ‘run’ on that position. If the Rams’ first selection triggers a run to a positional group, they have influenced the way the overall draft plays out. So that first pick is all the more vital.
Each NFL team has a number of simulations that can advise the team when to pick whom, based upon the actions of previous teams. If an NFL team determines the roster needs an offensive tackle and an edge rusher, but there is a dwindling supply of edge rushers, they will go edge to ensure that they have a competent option.
In this upcoming draft, an argument can be made for the Rams to choose an interior offensive lineman, an outside linebacker, a cornerback, a linebacker and a special teams punt and or kick returner.; Other positions that could be drafted include quarterback, offensive tackle, and wide receiver.
And this draft does have some depth, right where the Rams need talent. The Rams could add players on day three who can contribute this year. But, in the end, it will all depend upon how the dominoes fall in the draft.
