The LA Rams made a monster trade to get a new starting quarterback by the name of Matthew Stafford on the roster for the 2021 NFL season. That was after the team promoted backup quarterback John Wolford, a move necessitated after a broken and dislocated thumb in Jared Goff’s throwing hands. That promotion was not the “I like Wolford better than Goff” scenario that you may have guessed. It was the reality that Goff’s throwing hand had swollen so much that he could not go. Wolford, as the backup carried on the roster all season, would have to do so.

That was their final game of the season. It was win-and-be-in the playoffs. So yes, it was a huge pressure-cooker of a game at the end of the 2020 NFL season. He won that game and started the Wildcard Round of the NFL Playoffs. But, he didn’t finish that game.

Wolford won the game under harsh circumstances, yes. But the offense scored just nine points in that game, no more than the nine points under Jared Goff just weeks earlier against the rival Seattle Seahawks. The defense matched the offensive output, putting up a safety and a pick-six interception.  Yes, John Wolford came through in the clutch.

Yes, John Wolford engineered a vital victory for the LA Rams when they needed one most. And yet, that game remains a concern. The Arizona Cardinals, the Rams opponent for Wolford, had not found ways to stop the Rams offense before. Yet on that afternoon, they managed to keep a non-Goff offense out of the endzone. And Wolford tossed an interception on the afternoon without a TD pass.
