Wolford may be called to start again

So now the LA Rams face some bad timing to the quarterback room. Stafford just arrives. John Wolford’s contract expires in 2022, in just one year. The Rams have Bryce Perkins in case of emergency and add camp-arm quarterback Devlin Hodges.  But are any of them truly able to win games if Stafford is hurt?

It’s a question that the organization, and the readers, must each come to grips with. The LA Rams have had a Steady-Freddie at the helm for four years. But when Goff went down, the Rams offense was back to field goals once more. I’m not knocking Wolford. Just facing the harsh truth. The Rams offense is not so quarterback-friendly that any ole quarterback can make it go.

The 2020 NFL season proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that player injuries can occur at the worst opportunity. For the LA Rams, that means that whoever comes into the game not only must be ready to relieve the starter for one game but must be able to lead this team’s offense for however long it takes for the starter to return. That could be a full season.

Some are okay with John Wolford starting however many games might be required in 2021 if Stafford is injured. Others may not be. The stats sheet for Wolford’s 2020 NFL season is 22 of 38 passes completed for 231 yards (57.9 percent completion), zero touchdowns, and one interception.

In one playoff appearance, he threw three of six for 29 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions. Wolford was sacked twice in the regular season, and once in the playoffs. The scoring for the Rams offense in the final game totaled nine points behind Wolford. The Rams defense scored nine points behind Wolford.

Some would point to that performance and believe that another quarterback on the roster would not be a terribly bad thing. That’s your call. All we seek to do here is provide some affordable, and yet effective, options.
