The LA Rams offseason started with the team losing their defensive coordinator Brandon Staley. Sure, he stayed in Los Angeles but he became the head coach of the LA Chargers. The coaching staff has made some drastic changes since Staley’s departure. But one change that the LA Rams have made is promoting safety coach Ejiro Evero to the secondary coach. The Rams made that change due to the defection of cornerback coach Aubrey Pleasant to take on the secondary coach role with the Detroit Lions. So just exactly is Coach Evero you might ask? Well, let’s dive into just how he is:
Ejiro Evero has been a coach in the National Football League since 2007, where he started his career as a defensive quality control coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He spent three seasons with the Buccaneers where the team tallied a 21-27 record with only one playoff appearance. The team went through two head coaching changes during his time with the team, both Jon Gruden, and Raheem Morris. Ultimately, Evero did not return to the team in 2010.
In 2010 Evero was not a member of any coaching staff in the NFL, however quickly returned to the league in 2011. He was hired by the San Francisco 49ers as a Quality Control Coach. From 2012-2013, he was promoted to Offensive Assistant Coach, and then from 2014-2015, he was promoted to Defensive Assistant coach. During his five seasons tithe the 49ers, the team tallied a 46-30-1, a 4-2 playoff record and a trip to the Super Bowl, and two head coaching changes that included both Jim Harbaugh and Jim Tomsula.
Pack up and let’s go
In 2016, Evero was hired by the Green Bay Packers as a Defensive Quality Control Coach. During his lone season with the Packers, the team went 10-6 and earned a trip to the NFC Championship Game under head coach Mike McCarthy. The Packers suffered a 44-21 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. Evero was one of the most respected coaches on the staff and his impact was definitely felt throughout the locker room.
In 2017, Evero was hired by the head coach and his long-time friend of eight years Sean McVay to be the Safety Coach of the LA Rams. In four seasons as the Rams safeties coach, the team tallied a 43-21 record, a 3-3 playoff record, and a trip to the Super Bowl in 2018. In 2021 Evero will take on the biggest role of his career, coaching the Rams number one ranked secondary in 2020 (per Pro Football Focus 2020 NFL Rankings).
Coach Evero has made quite an impact in his 13 seasons coaching in the National Football League. So much that this offseason, he was a finalist to become the Packers Defensive Coordinator. There is no doubt that Ejiro Evero will one day become a head coach in this league. The Rams secondary will be taught by one of the best in the business. Now the only question is, in spite of his promotion, just how long can the LA Rams keep him on staff?
