You may not realize it, but the LA Rams have been picking from the NFL Draft for many years. Surprisingly, the history of the entire NFL Draft process has found the Rams choosing with the 57th pick of the NFL Draft a mere seven (7) times. How odd is that?  Since its inception in 1937, the NFL has had 84 organized NFL Drafts for the Rams. Of course, the Rams have played in Cleveland, Los Angeles, Saint Louis, and then back to Los Angeles again.

To uncover the history of the LA Rams with the 57th pick, I turned to the experts over at Pro Football Reference.  They have a database full of Rams’ franchise history. But if you use their data, be sure to confirm. As will many databases, the fields are auto-populated and grab the first value in the field from the source. That resulted in Van Jefferson, a transfer student from Mississippi to Florida to appear in the database as a Mississippi receiver.

The first pick at 57 for the Rams occurred in 1949, the same year that the team drafted legendary quarterback Norm Van Brocklin at 37. Unfortunately, the player chosen at 57, was Charles Reynolds, who played the back position out of Texas Tech. He didn’t make the team that year, which is not surprising because the Rams drafted 25 players that year.

The Rams chose OB Charles Reynolds from Texas Tech in 1949.
The Rams chose Charlie Allen from San Jose State in 1954.
The Rams chose OG Dick Enright from USC in 1957.
The Rams chose RB Joe Auer from Georgia Tech in 1963.
The Rams chose DT Marc Boutte from LSU in 1992.
The Rams chose OT Rob Havenstein from Wisconsin in 2015 (starting RT for 6 years)
The Rams chose WR Van Jefferson from Florida in 2020 (Starting WR3 for 2 years)

And of course, the Rams’ first selection of the 2021 NFL Draft may or may not be at 57. After all, this is a pretty uncertain draft, and there is always a chance that the Rams will trade back.

The 57th pick of the NFL Draft has yielded some noteworthy players. Of course, the LA Rams have two such players. Now the Rams are preparing to choose from that spot once more, their third time in the past six years. Does practice make perfect? Well, certainly some prospects and a host of LA Rams fans hope so.
