AFC contracts (continued)

This brings us down to the home stretch, the AFC South and West conferences. Of course, there is plenty of items to decipher. How did Urban Meyer get such a huge payday? How did Jon Gruden get such job security?

AFC South

Tennessee Titans       11-5                      Mike Vrabel, $3 million
Indianapolis Colts       11-5                      Frank Reich, $4.5 million
Houston Texans             4-12                   David Culley, perhaps $4 million speculative?
Jacksonville Jaguars      1-15                   Urban Meyer, $12 million.

Mike Vrabel, Tennessee Titans, $3 million: In three years, has never missed the playoffs. ‘Nuf said.

Frank Reich, Indianapolis Colts, $4.5 million: Made the playoff two times in the last three years.

David Culley, Houston Texans: Contract details never revealed, but he got a five-year deal. Your guess is as good as mine.

Urban Meyer, Jacksonville Jaguars, $12 million: The Jags have never publicly revealed his salary, so that’s an educated guess by the pundits of what it took to lure him out of retirement from the collegiate coaching ranks.

AFC West

Kansas City Chiefs        14-2                    Andy Reid, $8 million
Las Vegas Raiders           8-8                    Jon Gruden, $10 million
Los Angeles Chargers    7-9                     Vic Fangio, $5 million
Denver Broncos               5-11                  Brandon Staley, $5 million

Andy Reid, Kansas City Chiefs,  $8 million: Ditto above. Never had a losing season since coming to the Chiefs from the Eagles in 2013. Super Bowl Champion 2019.

Jon Gruden, Las Vegas Raiders, hit the motherlode with a 10-year $100 million contract to head up the team. Of course, much of the hoopla and compensation was intended to keep Gruden at the helm to navigate the transition to Las Vegas.

Vic Fangio, Denver Broncos, $5 million: Long-time defensive coordinator got his chance last year with the Broncos, who went 5-11 last year.

Brandon Staley,  that other LA team: Ex LA Rams defensive coach, no details made public, but pundits peg him at $5 million per year.

Hot. Bad optics can pose long-term impact for LA Rams Aaron Donald. light

Nobody has assembled an article like this before. Perhaps for a good reason, like nobody cares? Well, I found this information fascinating, and so I wanted to share it. After all, analysis needs good data. Now that we have the NFL head coaches’ salaries, we can start to look at other ways to use this information going forward.
