KISS it goodbye (Keep It Simple, Stupid)

Oh, how we love to blame in the modern era. But the value of determining who to blame neutralizes the effort to fix the problem. In the end, it’s fixing the problem that is the ultimate goal. So if you have to design an offense to unlock the pure talents of Jared Goff or Carson Wentz, where is the best starting point?

Well, KISS. Keep it simple, stupid. If either quarterback struggles to read certain types of coverages, NFL offenses have plenty of options to make the offense work.  The LA Rams discovered in 2020 that they could run the football very effectively against some of the most befuddling defenses in the NFL. That didn’t change the Rams’ play calling. But it should serve as a template for the Detroit Lions.

Goff is not a checkdown quarterback. He can and has thrown the ball down the field. But he has yet to show the ability to process an offense that has a Baskin Robbins menu of progression reads.  He is no champion of the ‘if then’ decision tree when he has less than three seconds to get to the fifth and sixth decisions in the tree. So offensive coordinators can and should simplify some things.

In the end, the 2021 NFL season will be tremendous tests for young quarterbacks Jared Goff and Carson Wentz. Once the face of their respective franchises, they must mature rapidly and prove that the faith and trust placed in their careers by the Detroit Lions and Indianapolis Colts was well place respectively.

Of course, the LA Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford has his own set of tests to pass this year for the LA Rams. He must prove the ability to hold up over a 17-game NFL season, as well as successfully navigate the NFL Playoffs. He has never won in the post-season. It seems that many questions will be answered this year.
