No run support?

Although the Rams were ranked as the seventh-highest NFL team for rushing attempts last season, it sure seemed as if there were far too many times when the Rams needed just a couple of yards to move the chains for a first down, and here comes the play in from the sidelines and oh, it’s an empty backfield for Goff. The defense knows it’s a pass play immediately, and as the cliche goes, pins their ears back. Goff was not the type of quarterback who seemed to thrive when the defense knew he was throwing.

And it was a safe bet that McVay’s offense was throwing. He loves to throw. McVay would throw on first down and less than a yard to go. Teams that have faced the Rams have grown to learn that trait, and have adjusted defensively to thwart the Rams passing game.

Curiously, the Rams were also ranked seventh in passing attempts last year, but somehow, it did not appear to be that balanced of an attack.

It is certainly a stat not lost on head coach McVay that after his team finished in the top two in scoring in each of his first two seasons, the Rams fell to No. 22 in 2020. And while it’s unfair to say the offense sputtered, it didn’t exactly look like a well-oiled machine very often, either. Certainly, that played a large part in the team’s motivation to pay a king’s ransom to acquire the veteran Stafford and part ways with Goff.
