The LA Rams did not nickel and dime defensive back Darious Williams when it became time to offer him a new contract to play for the team in 2021. In fact, the front office didn’t dive into any cost-benefit analyses over the correct Qualifying Tender Offer to make to their restricted free agent defensive back. Rather, the team saw that the best offer to extend was the First-Round Qualifying Tender offer. So that is the one the Rams chose.

Now the question is, why?

After all, there were less expensive options available. And the risk of losing Darious Williams to another NFL team was not great if you had read any of the initial reactions to the initial offer.  The Rams have paid DWill $4.766 million when many argue that they could have gotten away with a million less. Well, simply stated?

Because he is worth it. And even more than that, the LA Rams wanted to send a clear and obvious message to their young defensive back. We appreciate you. I believe he’s gotten the message.

After all, the Rams are playing the long game here where Darious Williams is concerned. And you need only take a look at his history in the NFL to find out why. He was an undrafted signing by the Baltimore Ravens out of the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2018.  Although he made it to the Ravens roster, he only saw action in three games before the Ravens waived him in October 2018.

The ever opportunistic LA Rams signed Williams off the Ravens’ waiver wire and used him sparingly in just one game that year. But the Rams’ own struggles with their secondary in 2019 forced the Rams to promote Williams into action, learning that Williams was amazingly effective in a starting role in the NFL.  By 2020, the Rams defense had a starting outside cornerback role for DWill and truly never looked back.

The Rams currently have extended Williams just one year. By 2022, he will be looking for a multi-year high-paying contract, and he certainly deserves one.  So when the LA Rams call Darious Williams’ agent about coming back to play for the team in 2022 and beyond, he’ll pick up the phone. You see, the LA Rams did right by him in 2021. He’ll do right by the LA Rams in 2022.
