Even as the LA Rams take aim at the 2021 NFL draft, someone has to be infusing a reality check to the team’s strategy. $100 in your pocket can be spent a hundred different ways while you have the cash in your pocket. But it can only be spent once when it leaves your hand. Just once, and whatever you purchase with that money had better be worth it.
And that is one of the unspoken challenges of the 2021 NFL Draft. Mock after Mock draft tosses out the names of prospects, all the way from the first to the 255th prospect chosen. But at that point, the simulation ends. For some teams, that’s enough. Either the team’s roster is filled at that point, or the team seldom considers undrafted players for a contributing role.
The Rams are neither full nor aloof when it comes to players signed after the NFL draft concludes. The Rams depend heavily upon undrafted rookies to reinforce the roster, transform into NFL starters while developing on the practice squad. These LA Rams ensure those undrafted players also have clear, if not more challenging, paths to make the roster.
Of course, we don’t own the patent on speculation on the Rams draft strategy. Former Rams QB Jim Everett has some thoughts on the matter. How does he line up with our thoughts?
In 2021, the team cannot possibly add enough players to the roster to ensure success for the 2021 season.
That will only happen with the help of players signed after the draft. They will number well over a dozen new faces, all arriving with two common goals: make the roster and play well enough to enjoy a long NFL career.
