Do you believe that the LA Rams roster is good as is?
By Bret Stuter
The LA Rams are an excited bunch of executives, staff, and coaches right now. After all, it’s their Christmas season, the time of the NFL fiscal year that the team will be adding a tremendous number of new faces to the roster. This year, that number is just one shy of two dozen. 23 new faces, likely all rookies, joining the team.
No wonder everyone is excited and smiling. But perhaps the new 9000-square-foot Malibu Beach House that is their temporary Draft HQ has everyone a bit too giddy. You see the Rams think-tank that the Rams are good to go at offensive center if need be (at the 5:00 minute mark).
The Rams are comfortable (or are just putting on a brave face) that the roster, as is, can get the job done. (Sean McVay addresses this about the 20:30 mark in the above video). Of course, entering an NFL Draft with only six picks, and one of the least valuable groups of picks available to any NFL team, the Rams are not going to show frustration or panic during a pre-draft press conference.
But stepping back for a moment, the LA Rams lost a few players to the NFL Free Agency market, but for the most part, the team had depth already built into the roster. Tight end Gerald Everett is backed up by Brycen Hopkins. Wide receiver Josh Reynolds is backed up by Van Jefferson. Right now, the offense is somewhat set. Even the offensive line is capable of putting five starting-caliber players on the field (from the team’s perspective, not the fans’ perspective).
Perhaps the team has become too shallow on defense at cornerback and edge rusher. But even there, the Rams do have enough position flex on the roster to fill spots with starting caliber.
No team will admit to what they are looking for in earnest during the draft before it happens. The risk of giving away the team’s strategy is first and foremost on both Les Snead and Sean McVay’s minds at this point in time.
The Rams have to believe that they can handle any draft scenario at this point. If the Rams enter this draft with a ‘must get’ position or player, then the Rams organization has failed. But head coach Sean McVay reiterates at the 25:30 mark that the team feels that they can face the 2021 NFL season ‘as is’
Obviously, they won’t. The LA Rams will add 23 more players, whether through the draft or signed after the draft. But the official stance is that the coaches are comfortable with who they have. That’s a matter of self-preservation. When the Rams first pick is at the 57th selection of the draft, the team cannot depend on the random chance of the draft to fill a roster spot.
