What do you do when you cannot get data analytics to satisfy the appetite of coaches and scouts? Well, you go to the source. And in a year where direct contact is prohibited, and the team must do all meetings virtually, you go to a first-hand witness. Well, the LA Rams are smarter than they look sometimes, as the ability to get full draft profiles of many prospects in 2021 is limited to the available data.

And for many prospects, that available data is not available for 2020.

But lo and behold, the Rams have a unique solution to that problem When the team hired on offensive line coach Kevin Carberry from Stanford University, they not only acquired his ability to coach and develop offensive linemen, but they also got their hands on three years of college recruiting and analysis data of the Stanford players, the Pac-12 conference players, and any player Carberry was or had actively recruited.

Human Intell

A lack of hard data won’t be as handicapping for the Rams as some NFL teams. The Rams possess the coach who has worked for years with Stanford offensive tackle Walker Little and offensive center Drew Dalman. No, the Rams have not met with either prospect, because they have the guy that wrote the book on both.

But I am fascinated that the Rams have met with two highly respected players from the University of Washington in OLB Joe Tryon and CB Elijah Molden. No doubt Coach Carberry weighed in on both.  He likely had plenty to say about Oregon CB Thomas Graham and UCLA RB/WR Demetric Felton.

Ultimately, Carberry has likely been the greatest help in assessing offensive linemen across the country, and in discussing the strengths and talents of defensive players as well. When the Rams organization is picking for the first time in the 2021 NFL Draft, this team will need an edge to find quality prospects quickly. They have that edge, and his name is Kevin Carberry.
