Which LA Rams receiver will have best chemistry with Stafford?
By Bret Stuter
In the speculative future of the LA Rams offense, there is bound to be that point in time where one receiver transforms from a target to the go-to target. Now, the only question is, who will that be? Well, there are several ways to approach this puzzle. We could look at the most consistent players on the Rams offense, and project that into the Stafford-led offense. Or, we could look at Stafford in the Detroit Lions offense, and project that onto the LA Rams receivers.
Or we can mix and mingle a little of both. After all, we all know that the final say of the Rams offense is head coach Sean McVay. So in the course of identifying the receiver who generates the best chemistry with the new quarterback, we’re really looking at which receiver performs the best with Stafford.
Now that is a puzzler. How so?
The Rams are not exactly a team with multi-style receivers. The team has compiled an excellent receiver group that plays a very similar style. The Rams emphasize route running, and the team has three excellent route runners in Robert Woods, Cooper Kupp, and Van Jefferson. The team also emphasizes blocking, and the trio of receivers all can block as well.
So let’s do this another way. Let’s create specific categories of yards, touchdowns, most improved, and longest play from scrimmage.
WR with the most yards in 2021 – The favorite for this category is Robert Woods. He just shows up year-in and year-out and does whatever the team asks of him. He has put up over 1200 yards in a Rams uniform before. He’ll do it again this year
WR with the most TDs in 2021 – The favorite for this category is Cooper Kupp. He has been the teams leading scorer through the air before. When he was unable to answer the bell in the playoffs for the second time in three years, fans are beginning to take notice. He gets back on track with 10+ touchdowns this year.
Most improved WR in 2021 – The favorite for this category is Van Jefferson. After all, his 2020 performance barely scratched the surface of what he can do. His 2020 totals of 220 yards receiving and one touchdown will improve significantly in 2021.
WR with the longest catch in 2021 – The favorite for this category is DeSean Jackson. Even injured in 2020, and with 236 total yards for the season, Jackson’s longest play was an 81-yard pass reception. Even if he merely matches that with the LA Rams, it will be the longest pass play for the team this year.
The LA Rams offense builds upon the success of one player to create opportunities for others. The team may have one or two hot receivers for a small period of time, but sooner or later the team finds another player heat up. By season’s end, it seems to balance out.
