NFL Draft 2021: This 1st rounder would be dream fit for LA Rams
By Jay Blucher
His coaches call him The Unicorn. Because it’s the universal symbol for a beautiful creature that combines both fantasy and rarity. And that’s Kyle Pitts, tight end from The University of Florida. His own college coach Dan Mullen might have been the first to hang that moniker on him, and it’s a title Pitts not only embodies but embraces.
Officially, he’s a tight end, but at 6-foot-6, 245 pounds, he plays like a wide receiver with freaky wide receiver skills. Many scouts think his ceiling in the NFL is so high that they expect him to completely redefine the tight end position. He would make an incredible weapon for the LA Rams and new quarterback Matthew Stafford.
Think former Detroit Lions 6-foot-5 wide receiver Calvin Johnson as a tight end. That’s Kyle Pitts today – Megatron 2.0.
Unique barely begins to describe the skillset Pitts brings to the table. Line him up anywhere and heave the ball in his direction, and chances are good he comes down with it. He creates instant matchup problems for a defense wherever he lines up on the field. Unlike a more traditional tight end, you simply can’t cover this guy with a linebacker alone.
Nothing less than a double-team with a safety over the top will do. If you throw a cornerback alone at him, he can run right by him with a burst of blazing speed, not to mention his size will let him tower over most corners. And he still might catch the ball no matter how you might choose to defend him.
A true multi-purpose weapon who has been rightfully anointed as the best player in this draft not named Trevor Lawrence. And most certainly will be the first player taken that’s not a quarterback. The only question is, with so many quarterback-needy teams vying for a prime position to draft one, how far will he fall?
Already, he’s expected to light up the league, wherever he’s picked. The Dallas Cowboys owner and sometimes GM Jerry Jones fairly gushes over the guy, having made reference in the recent past to dreams of “sugarplums” of Pitts playing for America’s Team.
Unicorns are just that, too – dreamy.
Is it fantasy to think he’d make a good Rams weapon? Of course. He’d make a good ____ (insert all 32 team names here) rookie. And will he be gone in the first round? Definitely, probably Top Five, not any later than the sixth pick, although most of the draft are experts predicting the Atlanta Falcons snatch The Unicorn with their fourth pick.
In a draft that’s almost totally devoid of consensus, there is uniform agreement about Pitts being that sure-fire lock, that can’t-miss selection.
