The LA Rams sat out the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft. That was a bit less engaging. Okay, so this is what it feels like to go to the candy store without any money in my pocket. Kinda sucks, to be honest. Still, the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft is on the books was not as painful as first imagined. The NFL, for all of the bluster and false bravado, still obeyed some of the basic NFL Draft rules.

The number of trades was just three, which is a pretty paltry number of day one of an NFL Draft. There were plenty of surprisingly benign mini-runs. There were periods where offensive tackles were selected back-to-back, running backs (the only two) were selected back to back, and of course a pretty healthy crop of wide receivers.

For those who follow these sort of things, the number of players picked in round one were:

Quarterback – 5
Tight end – 1
Wide receiver – 5
Cornerback – 5
Defensive End -1
Linebacker – 3
Edge – 5
Offensive guard – 1
Offensive tackle – 4
Running back – 2

The fact that the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft included five QBs and two RBs, the first round was heavy in positions where few expect the LA Rams to be looking in this draft.

That will likely change in rounds two and three. Thankfully, the Rams will participate in rounds two and three of the 2021 NFL Draft, and won’t have to sit out as spectators. The three picks in day two could quickly multiply, as the Rams’ current picks are all ideal locations for other teams to target to trade up.  The Rams will likely be committing their efforts to fill their roster with intensity in round three.  That is not to say that the team won’t pick at 57. It’s just that I am less convinced that the Rams will pick there unless a coveted player drops to them at 57.
