3 crucial 4th round picks can turn LA Rams draft around instantly
By Bret Stuter
So how are you feeling about this LA Rams draft so far? How would you feel if the LA Rams landed Virginia’s outside linebacker Charles Snowden, Penn State’s offensive center Michal Menet, and Michigan State cornerback Shakur Brown in round four of the 2021 NFL Draft? Now, this is by no means a prediction, nor is it some psychological attempt to double down on disappointment across the fanbase by setting the Rams draft up to fail.
The fact is that the draft class is just two rookies selected out of a class that has grown to seven. And the good news is that many of the better players in this draft at positions of need for the LA Rams are still on the board. What positions of need still have worthwhile prospects?
Offensive center
Penn State Michal Menet is a 6-foot-4 301-pound mauler who is mean and nasty. He loves to hit somebody, and his team captain status is always a plus. (6.16 grade per NFL.com)
Stanford Drew Dalman is a 6-foot-3 295-pound under-the-radar center who has instant repoire with LA Rams offensive line coach Kevin Carberry. (5.88 grade per NFL.com)
Georgia Deontrey ‘Trey’ Hill is a 6-foot-4 319-pound behemoth is a versatile inside offensive lineman who is recovering from meniscus surgery. If medically cleared, he will be a stud in the NFL (5.69 grade per NFL.com)
Outside linebacker
Virginia Charles Snowden is a 6-foot-6 243-pound outside linebacker who is a player I would cheer to the Rams roster. He is a bit raw, but incredibly versatile, a strong character, and his length has so many uses in both the pass rush and creating nightmares in pass coverage. (6.22 grade per NFL.com)
Tulane Patrick Johnson is a 6-foot-2 240-pound pitbull off the edge who is relentless in his pursuit of the quarterback. He has plenty of moves in his arsenal. He will get into the rotation quickly, and perhaps starter down the road. (6.10 grade per NFL.com)
Ohio State Jonathon Cooper is a 6-foot-3 253-pound mammoth who has been one of the most impressive outside linebackers I have seen in my small sampling of video reviews. And safety Jordan Fuller certainly has lobbied for the Rams to draft Cooper. He has been projected late in the draft, but he shows up so big in big games. (5.68 grade per NFL.com)
Cornerback
Michigan State Shakur Brown is a 5-foot-10 185-pound defensive back who would be an immediate candidate for the third cornerback on the field in either the nickel or dime packages. He can play both outside and slot, and shadows receivers the length of the field. (6.23 grade per NFL.com)
South Carolina Israel Mukuamu is a very intriguing defensive back. He has the link to Rams RB coach Thomas Brown and is a 6-foot-4 212-pound defensive back. His size alone is worth a pick, as he would be the tallest defensive back in the NFL. That length makes him a win in contested balls, and his reach makes putting the ball over his head an impossibility. (6.00 grade per NFL.com)
UCF Tay Gowan is another taller defensive back at 6-foot-1 186-pounds. He has attracted plenty of interest, in that he fits the bill as ‘Super-safety’, which is the hybrid cornerback/safety who can cover well enough to fill the role at nickel or dime packages, yet is strong enough to show up in a safety-like role in crowding the box in run support. (5.67 grade per NFL.com)
In the end, there is plenty of talent remaining. And with five picks to go, the 2021 draft class can end the day in many ways as the rookie class that most fans ultimately have hoped for. Round four of this draft is where the LA Rams seem to have drawn the line in the sand. Let’s hope that the Rams deliver.
