Has there ever been a rookie receiver that the duo of LA Rams GM Les Snead and head coach Sean McVay didn’t like? Did they draft another receiver? Well, not exactly. You see, the LA Rams added wide receiver, Ben Skowronek, out of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football program. Well, much like the earlier selection of UCF WR/TE Jacob Harris, the NFL, and more specifically, the LA Rams, view Skowronek as a tight end. Not just for his height and weight, but for many of the characteristics of his skillset.

You see, the 6-foot-3 220-pound target from the Notre Dame Fighting Irish is a scrapper when the football comes his way. He fights for the ball and wins possession more often than not. With his 6-foot-3 height, he will certainly get looks from veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford if he gets onto the football field.

Oh, by the by. Skowronek is a phenomenal blocker. He is one of the few receivers (wide receivers or tight ends) whose draft profile includes the strength of  “Size and strength to pancake on perimeter and scrap near the line” and “Loves to fire off on defenders early in-game as a blocker. ” (5.86 grade per NFL.com) Nice, eh?

The Rams are fully aware that they had lost tight end Gerald Everett and his ability to catch a pass as well as to block so effectively. It could very well be that the 2020 tight end addition, Brycen Hopkins, simply didn’t master that blocking ability on par with the veterans?  If that is the case, then Skowronek may sneak in on the depth chart for playing time.

Of course, there is always one eye towards 2022, and that will be a time when the Rams will likely part ways with blocking tight end, Johnny Mundt. In the meantime, he has a solid reputation as a standout coverage player on special teams. Now the only question remaining is, How quickly can Rams TE/WR Ben Skowronek see action?
