Don’t discount LA Rams 3 UDFA defensive backs
By Bret Stuter
Super safety
DB Jovan Grant is a 6-foot-1, 210-pound safety who has all the making of a Super-safety in Raheem Morris’ defense. His stats from Merrimack are capped at 2019, as the football program did not compete during 2020. Merrimack college is nestled in the town of Andover, Maine. The school has a rich college sports history, but primarily in college ice hockey. In fact, no football was played in 2020.
Still, he did play competitive two-way football for three years on that football team and played well enough to attract the attention of the LA Rams organization from across the country.
Of course, the first thing I noticed about Grant is that hybrid S/LB look to him. In 30 games, the young man put up 155 tackles, 7.5 tackles for a loss, two quarterback sacks, three interceptions, eight pass defenses, four forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and even two blocked kicks.
This guy is not an NFL defensive back just yet. But he is a fearless defender who brings eyebrow-raising size and who has a football history of playing just about anywhere the coach wants him to go. He was a two-time Dual County League All-Star in football and joins teammate Sam Cooper as joining the NFL. Cooper is now an offensive lineman for the Baltimore Ravens.
