3 Rams debut defenders who will shine in 2021 debut
By Bret Stuter
Defensive back
When the LA Rams selected Central Arkansas defensive back, Robert Rochell, with the 130th pick of the 2021 NFL Draft, it was possibly the most important pick of the draft for the team. The pick was critical to the team, not for what position the team filled, but for who the team chose to fill it.
Letās face it, you donāt throw a slice of bologna between gruyere cheese and a slice of prime rib. You donāt serve canned mixed veggies with Filet Mignot and lobster tail. You donāt put junkyard tires on a Lamborghini. And you would never think to slap a coat of hardware store discount paint on gold trim.Ā The player who has now been chosen to line up next to Jalen Ramsey and defensive back Darious Williams needed to be a special player with elite potential.Ā Robert Rochell is such a player.
He is 6-foot-0 and 193 pounds. He is incredibly athletic, and he has a strong endorsement by one of the best in the business, Jim Nagy.
But where he shows up most is on the football field.
Nothing has come easy for him. He has suffered personal loss, as well as challenges on the football field. He was not extended any offers from FBS schools but did get a shot with the University of Central Arkansas. When he made the switch from wide receiver to cornerback, it all clicked for him.
Heās also a Senior Bowl standout as a gunner for punt coverage teams (anyone picking up on the Special Teams emphasis to this roster rebuild?). He was listed 12th on Bruce Feldmanās Freaks list (subscription required). Central Arkansas worked hard to bulk Rochell up and were able to do so.
He may not open up as the third defensive back in the rotation, but he will eventually get there. This is a strong gifted young man who is focused, mature, and ready to perform. Itās just a matter of time until the coaches and his teammates help him make the highlight reels.
