The LA Rams were pretty active in the 2021 NFL Draft. Well, more accurately, the team was very busy, in fact, as the roster swelled by nine new rookie players after it was all said and done. The Rams needed reinforcements. After all, the team only had 67 of 90 contracted players before the draft arrived. So while that influx coincided with the number of players lost via free agency, the numbers don’t line up. Defenders signed elsewhere, but the Rams drafted offensive players.

No matter.  No need to panic. They can fix that. The simple solution is to continue to deal, make last-second trades and sign some veteran NFL free agents to balance everything out. Pretty standard strategy. But the team is now at 88 of 99 roster spots filled, and the roster continues to be rather lopsided towards the skilled players.

Well, training camp begins soon. The mandatory minicamp, the one that all players must attend, is due to occur in one month’s time.  So the Rams will simply enter with more competition on offense Intense competition in training camp and preseason games will simply decide who gets the final roster spots. Unfortunately, it’s not exactly the best news for the players who barely made it to the 53-man roster in 2020, only to discover even more intense competition to retain that role in 2021.

Imagine being in a relationship for a year, only to hear from your partner that they want to start seeing other people. No matter how many reassurances come next, you already know what is coming – a breakup. You simply haven’t been told officially.  That is what the NFL draft results were to these three players.  The Rams are interested in other players, so much so that the team has spent draft picks on them. Now, go out and practice.

Who are the players who were given that message? Well, we know that the choice of Maryland’s Jake Funk pretty much placed both running back Raymond Calais and Xavier Jones on alert that their roster spots from 2020 are by no means certain for 2021. They are not alone and here are the three most obvious players who are already on the roster bubble.
