5 veteran outbound free agents who the LA Rams will miss in 2021
By Bret Stuter
DB Hill
The LA Rams secondary featured All-Pro defensive back Jalen Ramsey, a youthful but incredibly effective defensive back Darious Williams, and the third of three defensive backs, Troy Hill. Of the three, Hill is the LA Rams cornerback who many were less keen on, and some even spoke about benching him for David Long Jr.
Thankfully, the LA Rams did not heed that advice. Why? Well in the last six games of the 2020 NFL season, Hill accounted for three defensive touchdowns. Two of which were against the rival Arizona Cardinals.
Hill was by no means a shutdown corner, but he was a nice complement to his two teammates. Hill was a solid cover who was versatile enough to pick up whoever was left unclaimed. He was very active in the Rams defense, putting up 77 tackles in 2020, a career-high by a wide margin. He adopted the Rams pass defense philosophy by forcing opposing teams to keep everything in front, and then locking them up in a tackle quickly.
With just Ramsey and Williams remaining, the Rams will be forced to start a less experienced defensive back. That will bring its own set of growing pains as the secondary relearns how to synchronize coverages and communicate effectively. Hill will be missed during that transition period.
