LA Rams rookie WR Tutu Atwell may not be a 2021 impact player
By Bret Stuter
Have you had your fill over talking about the LA Rams wide receiver situation? I hope not. While the LA Rams rumors over the possibility have heated up fairly rapidly from no-way to well-it-could-happen to Well-the-Rams-are-talking-to-the-Falcons-about-trading-for-Julio-Jones, there are plenty of other things going on with the LA Rams wide receivers to warrant an article or a nice discussion.
I’m of the opinion that claiming the selection of wide receiver Tutu Atwell was a head-scratcher for many of you. Some were puzzled about why the LA Rams were committed to select him at 57 when many draft boards projected him to fall to late round-three or round four. Others were puzzled over how the LA Rams plan to use him this year.
Conceivably, unless he blows people away in training camp, he will be playing behind Robert Woods, Cooper Kupp, Van Jefferson, and DeSean Jackson. That is the spot on the depth chart that was held by rookie Trishton Jackson in 2020. Just to clarify, Trishton Jackson did not see a single offensive snap last year. So it may mean that translates into Tutu Atwell needing patience. And right now, that is the message he’s getting from his teammates.
Of course, patience is tough to exercise in the fast-paced world of an NFL rookie. It’s a new city, a new team, a new playbook, and new associates. With so much news about the LA Rams offense, the need to become dynamic and dangerous, it’s a difficult thing to accept a role that may have more next-time than this-is-my-time.
Whether or not the LA Rams pull the trigger on trading for Julio Jones, rookie Tutu Atwell is buried on the depth chart. His best chance at making a positive impact for the team this year is as a return specialist.
There are only so many roster spots and so many receiver spots. The Rams are bursting at the seams right now with good receivers. As the veterans have been encouraging the former Louisville rookie receiver.
“Patience”.
