New offensive look
So what will that offense look like on the opening day of the 2021 NFL Season? Let’s discuss:
We know that the Rams will rely heavily upon wide receivers Robert Woods and Cooper Kupp. We also know that the offense will likely replace the production of former Rams wide receiver Josh Reynolds with a heavier dose of second-year receiver Van Jefferson. That will vacate some offensive snaps to be absorbed by incoming veteran DeSean Jackson.
For the rest of the offense, It’s safe to expect veteran Tyler Higbee to see a more prominent role this year. But the Rams have Johnny Mundt, Brycen Hopkins, Kendall Blanton, and Jacob Harris to factor into the passing/blocking schemes as well. So how will that work?
The LA Rams stuck with a fairly tight offensive rotation in 2020. The receivers were primarily Robert Woods, Cooper Kupp, and tight end Tyler Higbee. Tight end Gerald Everett was used in 12 formations, and the Rams used wide receiver Josh Reynolds to stretch the field. This year, the Rams will likely split Everett’s workload between second-year Brycen Hopkins (we’ll finally get to see what he is all about) and rookie Jacob Harris.
The Rams’ passing offense will go with deeper routes in 2021. While everyone will look to veteran DeSean Jackson and rookie Tutu Atwell to stretch the field, look for second-year receiver Van Jefferson to create major damage with 15+ yard intermediate routes. After a few successful 20+ yard pass plays, the Rams offense will really begin to light up the field with everyone getting in on the aerial assault.
The Rams upgraded the roster with athleticism on both sides of the ball, and it’s not going out on a limb to expect some of that freakish athleticism to show up in the offensive play calling this year. The Rams need to amp up their scoring. Look for a host of new red zone plays to deliver touchdowns.
