Defensive back

From the moment that he entered the NFL in 2011, cornerback Richard Sherman has spent his entire NFL career in the best division in the NFL, the NFC West. Of course, his highlight reel would be dominated by the veteran’s eight seasons playing for the Seattle Seahawks. Of course, he surprised everyone in 2019 when he signed on with the San Francisco 49ers. Now, he is available to sign with a new team once more.

While he is no longer the prime-time spectacle that he was during his Seahawks Legion of Boom days, he still has some noteworthy ball skills to offer the right defensive secondary. The secret is to have enough depth to handle the likelihood of injury. In his past two seasons, he played 20 of 32 games. That is just not good enough for a team in need of a 17 game starter. But, it could be good enough for the Rams secondary.

The Rams already have two dominating starters in Jalen Ramsey and Darious Williams. But there is a question over the third cornerback in the wake of Troy Hill’s departure to sign on with the Cleveland Browns.  Of course, the Rams have third-year David Long Jr. and rookie Robert Rochell. But Sherman would take the Rams’ pass-coverage to an entirely new level.

Sherman has played for both the Seahawks and the 49ers, two of the Rams’ most competitive rivals. At 6-foot-3 and 195-pounds, he is large enough to defend even the tallest receivers. While he may not be as quick to match the breaks or double moves of today’s speedy receivers, the Rams have enough secondary talent to direct those coverages elsewhere.

Rams’ new defensive coordinator Raheem Morris loves to mix and match various defensive coverage schemes to optimize the chances of stopping the offense based on down and distance. Sherman, although a seasoned veteran, is still smart enough to create problems. His lone interception in 2020 was against the Rams quarterback Jared Goff. The Rams face Goff this year, and Sherman would be a great player to have on the field in Rams’ horns to welcome him back to SoFi Stadium.
