LA Rams: Team should kick the tires on OL David DeCastro
By Bret Stuter
Why the Rams should kick the tires
This guy is good. Like, really good. Even fighting through injuries, he made his sixth consecutive Pro Bowl. He’s a valuable asset for this young Rams offensive line group even by mentoring younger players on the bench. So why not bring him to SoFi Stadium, run him through the paces, gauge the level of mutual interest, and if things align, sign him to a backup role.
For DeCastro, he has a chance to heal, get paid, and remain every bit a part of the game that he loves so much. While he wouldn’t be taking in an average of $10 million a year, the Rams could get an attractive amount of money to him to be on the roster. Then, if he is ready and healthy to start once more, he can show up and play up to signing a big contract next year. After all, he joined the NFL in 2021, but Andrew Whitworth joined in 2006. Big Whit would help David DeCastro lengthen his NFL career.
Even if the two parties fail to reach an agreement now, it sets up the Rams for a shortlist of veterans to contact later in the year if the team needs to reinforce the roster. Injuries can happen quickly, and multiple injuries can blow the Rams right out of contention with the current roster set up as it is.
Bringing David DeCastro may not be a true tryout. It may even involve trying to recruit a seasoned NFL veteran to getting back into pads for one more run at a Super Bowl. And yes, DeCastro is that level of good that he is absolutely worth it. He is a savant at pass blocking, and he would be the final keystone to ensure that the LA Rams offensive line is up to the task of creating a safe pocket for new quarterback Matthew Stafford.
The LA Rams have zilch to lose by bringing in DeCastro now. In fact, it could be one of the wisest moves they make this year.
