The easiest way for a human to organize the vast amounts of new information in memory lies in an association of the new data with already learned data. And so, we place unfamiliar novelties into familiar categories. While not entirely accurate or effective, it does allow one person to talk about something new to others, with the expectation that others will quickly be able to understand the attributes and framework.

If I talk about a rookie and mention Calvin Johnson in the description, you likely will think of a tall, fast, and very talented wide receiver. If I describe a new home and describe it as a geodesic dome, an image will likely form in your mind. That’s how we communicate complex ideas, through the use of association.

That same scientific method of classification applies to units or teams. We talk about some of the NFL’s historic great Super Bowl defenses, and most think of the 1985 Chicago Bears unit. Of course, one of the better and copiable defenses is the Tampa 2, a defense that Raheem Morris knows well.  We’ll look at how that might influence the LA Rams in 2021. But for now, off we go to look at the offense.

Which historically great NFL offense featured one running back, a ton of weapons in the passing game, and one pocket passer who made it all purr like a kitten?
