The LA Rams are fighting the fine line between the NFL salary cap and perennial contender. It’s not an easy tightrope to cross each year, because the conditions change dramatically. You see, the Rams want to sign up their best talent on long-term contracts. But each time the team succeeds at locking up a talented player, less money is available to sign others.

And so, the LA Rams have a plan in place to commit so many dollars and roster spots to a specific position group, a tightening of the belt as it were. That process limits just how much the team can do in terms of who they sign and to which position. With limits on how much the team can spend, and on which positions, the task of rostering up for a new season has become somewhat of a Rubik’s cube for the front office.

Of course, finding players who are quite versatile helps out tremendously. It’s the age-old reversible coat that is as good as two coats in one. Or the swiss army knife, set with enough gadgets to meet the needs of practically any situation. Recently, the LA Rams front office has targetted players who resemble reversible coats, or even swiss army knives.

That means that those players who are limited to specific niche roles may struggle to find a spot on the Rams roster in 2022. Now keep in mind that is a year away, and things can change over the long course of a full season.

But based on the latest trend of the front office, and the verbiage of the coaching staff, the days of the one-role player on the Rams roster will be very difficult to justify.
