LA Rams: 3 reasons why the offensive line will be very good
By Bret Stuter
Corbett may exceed expectations
Austin Corbett may be a better offensive center than we expect. After all, he practically got off the plane in Los Angeles, suited up, and was starting for the team at left guard in 2019. In 2020, with almost no time to prepare, he was reassigned to the right guard position where he played the entire 2020 season. Now, for the first time since joining the LA Rams, he will have an entire offseason to prepare for and learn his new role as the team’s starting offensive center.
Each season, Corbett has improved. His 2020 playoff performance was pretty spectacular per Pro Football Focus, which awarded him an 80.9 grade. That came after earning better than a grade of 70.0 for the regular season. With that kind of improvement already in place, there is every reason to expect good things from Corbett this year. But there’s more.
As we stated previously, this training camp will essentially be Corbett’s first with the LA Rams. The extra available time to work with his teammates, establish lines of communication, and repeatedly coordinate with them is incredibly valuable. Corbett is a seasoned veteran who has been improving his performance on his newly adopted team at an incredible pace. Now, the Rams will harness that expertise by placing him in the middle of the offensive line.
Corbett could be the best offensive lineman for the LA Rams in 2021. While Whitworth and Havenstein are experienced offensive tackles, Corbett’s real-world experience at starting for these Rams at all three interior offensive line positions will be crucial for his ability to call the right blocking schemes and direct his teammates to form an impenetrable pocket. This may be his first year at the offensive center position, but he has had a perfectly designed career track to assume the role this year.
