With a nod to their storied past and uniforms of yesteryear, on Tuesday, July 13, 2021, the LA Rams officially announced their new throwback, err “modern throwback,” white jerseys for the 2021 season.

The new uniform attire will debut on the field in Week One when the Rams open up the season at SoFi Stadium when the team takes on the Chicago Bears on September 12. That game will open up the 2021 Sunday Night Football schedule. Fans will also get the opportunity to eyeball the new threads two more times next season – Week No. 9 versus the Tennessee Titans on November 7, a game also featured on nationally-televised Sunday Night Football.

Ahh, but perhaps most significantly, the team will don the new white throwbacks on Week No. 10 versus their division opponent and erstwhile rival San Francisco 49ers on November 15, also under the klieg lights of a nationally televised Monday Night Football contest. Aside from the significance of this matchup, the 49ers will be sporting their own red “modern throwback” jerseys for this game. The Niners’ new throwbacks harken to colors that the team first sported in 1994.

We might call this game the Clash of the Throwbacks.

Perhaps you might even call it a “Which Team Wore It Better?” kind of encounter, and one that’s totally separate from the scoreboard.

A fashionista face-off.  A match of modern-day merchandise marketing. Now for the tough part. Who’s the sharpest-dressed?

At the very least, the two teams’ new throwbacks will surely inspire good memories in fans’ minds on both sides of the gridiron. After all, that’s the whole concept behind “throwback,” now isn’t it? (Aside from making cash registers sing anew.)

And here’s a peek at the side-by-side matchup of the tale of two throwbacks: 49ers throwbacks versus LA Rams throwbacks

The merchandise marketing gurus are calling the new duds “modern throwbacks” because it retains elements of the past, whilst adding a few new wrinkles. It beckons a bit to their past, circa 1973 through 1999, when the team carried its traditional and trademark blue and yellow combo with them from LA to St. Louis. And now, a bit of that look from the past returns to LA with the new jerseys.

For example, the new throwbacks will feature horns and numbers on their sleeve caps. Yet retains the numbering style of the current duds.

As that old marriage saying goes: Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.

And if you put much credence on promotional photos as released by the team, it appears as if the new offering will be paired with yellow Sol pants. The Rams’ color palette and options for mix ‘n’ match choices continue to expand. . . and the merchandise dollars follow.
