The effect?

So nicknames sprout sometimes as the result of a funny set of circumstances. Or the way you appear. Or the clothes you wear. It requires a perfect storm, a confluence of events.  Or sometimes, an imperfect storm. (of bees)

Or how somebody else just views the cut of your jib. I mean nobody knows William Perry, but everybody knows who “The Fridge” is. Everybody. But the Fridge had a spin-off nickname in B.J. Raji’s “The Freezer”. Now that’s some serious mojo of nicknames when it incubates branch nicknames of future players? Oh yeah.

It’s no coincidence then, that nicknames would be so popular in sports, across all sports. It’s the spice that makes it so entertaining. It’s the F-key of language, the abbreviated version of an NFL player’s name, team, history, and aura in one simple utterance. It even denotes an upper strata level for the player, that crossing over from just an average ham and egger to the aristocracy of the NFL. It’s the one-word singer designation like Cher, Beyonce, Gaga, Tinashe, Prince, Elvis, Sting, Usher,

A nickname is more than just desirable, it’s cool, a symbol of locker-room acceptance, of recognition, of camaraderie. Both fame and infamy rolled up as one. We need to give Aaron Donald a truly cool nickname. The team that gave the NFL “Night Train” “Crazy Legs”, “Deacon” and “Big Game” deserves to add another one to the mix. It’s past due.
