McVay taps the brakes

Of course, ever the poker-faced gambler, LA Rams head coach Sean McVay immediately walked back the insinuation from Atwell’s comments that he would be taking over the job. That’s the McVay thing, you see. After the Rams signed last year’s star NFL punter, Corey Bojorquez, McVay insisted that there would be no competition for the punting role. But Hekker wasn’t fooled, and he is approaching the 2021 training camp as though his job is on the line. Smart move.

Nsimba Webster should have gotten that memo too. Even as head coach Sean McVay denied any decision that rookie Tutu Atwell was the team’s punt returner, Tutu Atwell has emerged as the favorite to be this year’s punt returner. The Joe DeCamillis has begun, and it’s beginning with a bang.

You see, after today’s rather busy events, it appears to be a safe bet that rookie Tutu Atwell will be fielding punts and kickoffs.

The LA Rams need more juice in their special team’s performance this year. The Rams did not settle in on a true placekicker until a mid-season signing landed the team Matt Gay, who quickly claimed the role with both longer field goals and more accurate kicking than any candidate prior to his arrival.  Now, about the return and coverage areas
