Money is limiting, but not impossible

Of course, there are those who will veto any veteran free agent signing, particularly those who feel that the Rams are good to go right now. Even if they are good to go, which is entirely up for debate, the depth of the team’s defensive roster can change suddenly with one injury. There are some veteran players who are a must to remain healthy if this team is to have any real chance of success this year. Outside linebacker Leonard Floyd is among that select group.

The Rams must be aware of the growing belief that Wright could return to the Seahawks this year. At one point, that seemed all but impossible. Now, the two sides are thawing out the idea of reuniting for another season. That is not good news for the Rams, because Wright has been one of the emotional leaders of the Seahawks defense. If he comes back for a one-year deal, their defense will have a no-holds-barred version of Wright, and that spells trouble for opponents.

Rather, the LA Rams would be well-served to bring Wright to Los Angeles for a tryout. He has the kind of sage wisdom that is incredibly helpful on the football field, particularly when line up next to the young linebackers of the Rams defense who will be expected to make plays and diagnose defenses. Right now, the team does not have that mentor-like veteran who can help out the Christian Rozebooms or the Ernest Jones on the football field.  Wright would not only play, but he would help elevate the play of young teammates.

Wright is coming off a two-year $14 million deal with the Seahawks. The Rams should try to sign the guy to anything at or under $6 million, and use voidable years to limit this year’s cap impact to $2 million or less. There is a lot more at stake here than the team’s purse strings, or a warm and fuzzy feeling about the Rams financial picture. The Rams are after winning the Super Bowl. If K.J. Wright can help the team do so, he belongs on this roster. The organization owes it to itself to bring him in to find out.
