Matthew Stafford’s can’t hide his lyin’ eyes, and the LA Rams love it

You know, sometimes there is just too much to say about the LA Rams‘ new quarterback Matthew Stafford.  You can talk about his deep pass. You can talk about his intestinal fortitude. You can even wonder why a guy who many have praised as one of the most talented quarterbacks in the NFL has not enjoyed ample success in the pros.

And yes, we’ve touched on all those topics.

But we’ve saved something special for just the right moment. A bit of flourish that we’ve saved for that special occasion. A bit extra, like topping off a delicious hot fudge sundae with whipped cream, sprinkled crushed nuts, and a maraschino cherry. Yeah, that kind of special topping.

But the reason we wanted to save this treat is not to tease you or keep you at the edge of your seat, but rather we simply had to await confirmation. In short summary? Matthew Stafford’s eyes lie. And it’s really shocking the hell out of both the Rams wide receivers and defensive backs, lol.

You can’t hide your lyin’ eyes

Lyin’ eyes. I can’t help but chuckle to myself over it. The 70s rock band The Eagles had a song called Lying Eyes with the following lyrics:

A quarterback who can look one way and throw with pinpoint accuracy is at an entirely other level folks. It takes away the last bastion of the elite status from the NFL’s top defensive backs. They know where the quarterback is throwing by sitting back and ‘reading the quarterback’s eyes’.  Now, take that away, and what do defensive backs truly have?

Not much.

Let’s recap. Stafford looks at a spot or a receiver and holds that position. Defensive backs who are reading Stafford’s eyes now cheat in that direction. Then, without notice, Stafford chucks a spiral to the other part of the field to an open receiver with pinpoint accuracy. He’s like his own offensive cheat code.

You will have plenty of time to see for yourself. But that bomb-dropping arm won’t mean much if the deep guy isn’t open.  But he likely will be. You see, Matthew Stafford can’t hide his lyin’ eyes. And to be truthful, LA Rams head coach Sean McVay is counting on that very fact.
