LA Rams: One last look at the young receivers as training camp winds down
By Bret Stuter
Ben Skowronek
While a late arrival in the 2021 NFL Draft, wide receiver Ben Skowronek is already proving to the team and coaches that he truly possesses the strong hands necessary to catch the football in traffic. Skowronek is a bit different than the Rams’ typical receivers, and that is what makes this guy so very intriguing.
He will face tough odds, no doubt, because we are not even halfway through this list, and it already appears that the team is down to the last available slot on the roster. But the fact is that he has strong hands and that has already registered on the coaches, particularly head coach Sean McVay. Of course, therams.com J.B.Long has been noticing as well.
Like other rookies, Skowronek has been nursing an injury that has limited his ability to take the practice field. His is a hamstring muscle that has held him out for a day or two. But he has been present and accounted for, so he has been keeping up with installs, formations, and plays. He also rested during off days, which was very well-timed indeed.
At 6-foot-3 and 224-pounds, Skowronek is just so much of a different type of a receiver than the others, that I most certainly can see some strengths to the overall offense if he is retained and has a contributing role for the team. I’m uncertain if the Rams see that virtue as well. I think Skowronek makes early cuts, but to clear the last hurdle, he will need to show up in some preseason games I fear. Skowronek must unseat Trishton Jackson for the sixth and final roster spot, and I’m not certain that he can do that.
Of course, if he plays well enough, he could convince the coaches to convert an extra running back slot (fifth) or tight end spot (fourth) into an additional wide receiver spot (seventh). He has about a 35 percent chance of making that happen.
