Perkins(lator) had something hot brewing

On the other hand, I was A.O.K with Bryce Perkins seven of ten passes for 42 yards and a touchdown. I guess the fact that he ran four times to tack on another 23 yards helps. But it was more than box score production. Hodges seemed unsettled in the pocket. Perkins looked like a guy who had all the confidence in the world. He ran this offense that put out a five eligibles look, and he looked like he could do it again and again. He was the younger least experienced quarterback, and yet he had the poise of a player who could take over.  He was a mobile player who thought pass-first. Whoever is working with him, I hope they know what a fine level of discipline Bryce Perkins showcased in this one.

This one was a loss. Neither quarterback lit up the skies at SoFi, although I believe the depth at the LA Rams receiver position is tremendous. If I am a team that struggled to find solid receivers (hello Detroit Lions?!) in the draft, I’d camp out on the Rams waiver wire and claim any receiver shed by the team until the Rams get to 53 players.

I like this Bryce Perkins. I like how he showed a cool and steady hand with the Rams’ offense.  I don’t think Devlin Hodges sticks with the Rams, and after what I saw from one game, I am okay with that. He may do well elsewhere. For now, the LA Rams have Perkins to develop. With John Wolford on the last year of his contract, I expect that Perkins could give the LA Rams front office reason to invest limited salary cap dollars elsewhere.

After the game, I’m still a bit nervous about the LA Rams’ backup quarterback position. I’m concerned about backup quarterback John Wolford’s durability. I’m concerned about Devlin Hodges’s ability to run this offense. And I’m concerned that there is an awful lot depending on 20-21 games out of veteran and starting quarterback Matthew Stafford this season.

But as far as backup quarterback Bryce Perkins, he is further along and more developed than I expected. I’m not sold over the fact that the LA Rams failed to adequately bolster the quarterback depth after Matthew Stafford. But I am warming up to the idea of Bryce Perkins stepping in to handle Sean McVay’s offensive scheme. He seems right at home standing alone in an empty backfield.  Perhaps, in the end, that is the part that was more impressive than anything else.
