From what I saw of the LA Rams wide receiver depth in their first preseason game, there is not a bad apple in the bunch. This was after one last look at training camp and a review of the young receivers, and calling out some as not likely to make the roster. Well, I may have to rethink that. You see, nobody really stole the show on offense, but almost everyone showed competency. There is a pretty thick cluster of wide receivers on the roster right now.
That’s a good thing, in that it confirms that the front office has a fine eye for finding potential NFL talent during and after the NFL Draft. It’s also a bad thing because, if the historic trend is correct, the LA Rams will carry six receivers on the 53-man roster. Right now, Robert Woods, Cooper Kupp, Van Jefferson, and DeSean Jackson have four slots claimed.
All the other guys are fighting for two remaining roster spots. Folks, other NFL teams are not as effective at landing talented receivers. As soon as the Rams begin waiving players to squeeze into the 53-man roster limit, other teams will be happy to rummage through the Rams castaways to claim their prizes.
Well, perhaps the LA Rams have an option to retain at least one valued player through roster cuts. It seems that rookie wide receiver broke his arm, and is scheduled for corrective surgery for Monday, as per The Athletics Jourdan Rodrigue.
I think everyone was eager to see what the strong-handed Ben Skowronek might do in this LA Rams offense through the preseason. Because he is 6-foot-3 and weighs 224-pounds, he is a bit larger and more physical than the other LA Rams wide receivers. that opens entire different types of plays and usage for him in this offense. He also arrived at the Rams with a superb reputation for being able to block well.
There is no way that losing Skowonek, one more player, to an injury of indeterminable duration, is a good thing. But it’s history. Now it’s estimate what will the impact be on the LA Rams roster. With so many receivers vying for a roster spot, and all making comparable cases for doing so, Skowronek’s likely assignment to injured reserve will buy the organization some time to more fully vet the other receivers.
In a worst-case scenario, the Rams would be going with Trishton Jackson and Tutu Atwell for the final two roster spots. This gives the Rams a chance to keep Skowronek around a while longer.
