Of course, there were a few elements that made this all a bit challenging. For starters, the LA Rams parted ways with long-time offensive line coach Aaron Kromer. That not only reset the offensive line coaching staff but much of the valuable data built up over the years as well.  That was a huge hiccup in any plans to retool quickly.

Another factor that complicates the LA Rams offensive line is the varied injuries that have forced the team to retool and keep going. In 2019, the Rams starting offensive line was I. Andrew Whitworth, Joseph Noteboom, Austin Blythe, Austin Corbett, and Rob Havenstein.  After two weeks time, Noteboom was injured, and II. David Edwards was inserted at left guard. By the mid-point, Andrew Whitworth was injured, and III. Joseph Noteboom was inserted at the left tackle. But by the time the playoffs arrived, IV. Andrew Whitworth was reinstated into the offensive line (albeit not at 100 percent strength) and Bobby Evans replaced the now injured David Edwards at left guard.

So which one was most effective? Which configuration struggled the most? Well, we analyzed the four various configurations in terms of the most basic of ways: Wins and losses. We discovered some very curious and surprising qualities about the 2020 offensive line. But one thing was quite clear: Injuries in both 2020 and 2019 played a significant role in how effective the LA Rams offensive line performed.

Another quality about the offensive line that was a bit surprising is the effectiveness of the running game.  For example, did you know that the LA Rams rushing attack appeared to be at its best when the LA Rams offensive line had Joseph Noteboom on the football field?  Noteboom actually does a pretty good job in the running game of penetrating to the second and third levels. That’s incredibly vital for the type of running plays the Rams lean on.
