LA Rams: Projecting the final 53 man Rams roster for 2021
By Bret Stuter
Special teams
That brings the team down to the special teams’ specialists. Most of the decision points have already been crossed at long snapper and placekicker. The last decision that remains, for now, is the punter position. While it may upset some folks, I truly do not see how anyone can think that the Rams will ignore the performance Corey Bojorquez put up against the Denver Broncos and think he won’t get the job. Of course, some NFL team will either claim Johnny Hekker or wait for him to clear waivers to negotiate a cheaper contract.
Long Snapper: Active Roster: Matthew Orzech
Placekicker: Active Roster: Matt Gay
Punter: Active Roster: Corey Bojorquez Waived/Traded: Johnny Hekker
Active Roster: 3
Waived/Traded: 1
So where does this all leave us?
Active Roster: 52 (25+24+3)
Practice Squad: 14 +1 (exempt) (6+8)
Waived/Traded: 11 (4+6+1)
Injured Reserve: 3
Of course, the numbers above add up to the 80-man current roster but allows some room for one signing to the active roster, and two additions to the practice squad. The active roster priority in my mind is 1st – Running Back, 2nd – Outside linebacker, 3rd – Offensive lineman. As to the priorities for the practice squad? I expect that the Rams could pick up anyone who they feel is of exceptional value. Ultimately, I expect that the Rams will target an emergency long snapper, placekicker, and punter.
This is just a basic 53-man roster projection. As the Rams prune players, we will be certain to provide pluses and minuses for each transaction.
