As we sit and await the news about who is and who is not going to start the 2021 NFL Season on the LA Rams roster, there is another sneaky feeling that the LA Rams may not be settled just yet. Oh, I’m not convinced that the team will be headlining the national NFL news stories today, but call it an uneasy feeling about the team’s intentions. Why? Well, when I look over the roster, there are a number of players currently on the roster who, for one reason or another, may not fit the team’s plans for 2021.

Whether the team has a less expensive option, a more productive option, or a bit of both, the roster has a few players who have contributed in the past who may not have an identifiable role going forward.

Rams Roster

As I look up and down this LA Rams roster, two things jump out at me. First, there is a reason to be concerned about some areas on the LA Rams roster. What do I mean? The LA Rams opted not to draft or sign any free agents to help their offensive line, and I think that they may have come to a point of mild remorse over that action.

I suspect that the team is pondering whether adding just Sony Michel is sufficient to counter the losses of RB Cam Akers and Raymond Calais for the season, plus the durability concerns over Darrell Henderson.  To the durability question, will the Rams be able to handle a 17-game season with the is-he-or-isn’t-he questions overshadowing both Ogbonnia Okoronkwo and Terrell Lewis?

Rams Surplus

On the other hand, the LA Rams have some players who have experience, but who just no longer fit into the role that the team has assigned to them.  OT Bobby Evans is one such player. DB Jake Gervase is another such player. The Rams have surpluses at inside linebacker, wide receiver, and yes, even at punter.

While some teams may be content to try their luck at the waiver wire, other teams are not as warm and fuzzy about the risks involved in submitting a claim for a player on the waiver wire.  To sum it up, the worst teams get the prize. So a team like the Kansas City Chiefs or Tampa Bay Buccaneers have almost no chance of being awarded a waived player if any other team is interested as well.

NFL Senior Analyst Albert Breer, in his weekly NFL article MMQB (Monday Morning Quarterback), reports on the LA Rams rumors that the Rams would be willing to deal inside linebacker Micah Kiser.  Along that line, the consensus is that the Dallas Cowboys, and former Rams ST Coordinator John Fassel, might be willing to trade for Rams punter Johnny Hekker if Hekker found himself as the odd man out on roster cuts.
