LA Rams rumors: Johnny Hekker restructures deal to stay
By Bret Stuter
Okay, if you have two options, but one costs nearly five times what the other option costs, what do you do? Well if you are the LA Rams and the options are either Corey Bojorquez or Johnny Hekker, and Hekker costs nearly five times what Bojorquez costs, apparently you go back to Hekker and restructure his deal.
At least that is the reported rumor that has just popped on social media today.
It’s a frantic pace right now, as the likes of both ESPN’s Lindsey Thiry and The Athletic’s Jourdan Rodrigue have both spotted punter Johnny Hekker on the practice field. Meanwhile, his competition, punter Corey Bojorquez was not. So that has been interpreted by many to believe that punter Johnny Hekker has retained the starting role. But that price difference was tough to reconcile.
Until Ari Meirov shared this little tidbit:
Now the pieces are falling into place. While not yet confirmed, if the Rams were able to cut the cost of Hekker, that would now make far more sense. If the Rams were able to pull that cost of his contract back to the norm, the fact that the Rams wanted to keep Hekker around all along will not sting them nearly as much against their already too-tight-for-comfort salary cap.
While the contract restructuring is as yet still in question, the presence of Johnny Hekker on the team’s practice field is not. It would seem that the LA Rams leveraged Corey Bojorquez to get some concessions from Hekker.
And those roster cuts are still in need of confirmation.
