Rams Winner: Matt Gay

When a placekicker begins to get into a zone of getting points routinely, they begin to see fewer and fewer mentions in post-game coverage. So if we are one of the few sites mentioning the name of LA Rams placekicker Matt Gay, that’s why. He’s been very good so far this season.

The LA Rams searched for months in 2020, allowing competition among five different placekickers that eventually resulted in the team signing Matt Gay mid-season. Before Gay arrived, the Rams were not exactly getting automatic points with either field goals or extra points. Since Gay arrived, the Rams have pretty much been getting results at both.

So far for the season, Gay is four of four when kicking field goals, with the longest field goal that he has kicked so far this year being 53 yards. He is also seven of seven for extra points too. In Week 2, the margin of victory was 27-24. In that game, Gay kicked two field goals and three extra points. The LA Rams needed all of those points to ensure the win.

That’s one of the areas that few take notice of when everything is working. But here is a fresh perspective on just how important Matt Gay is to the team. The LA Rams have scored 61 points so far this season. Of that total, 19 points, or 31 percent of the scoring, have been off the foot of placekicker Matt Gay. That is significant.
