Matthew Stafford just put an exclamation point on his MVP candidacy
By Bret Stuter
I believe the question of whether the LA Rams will be good with the LA Rams offense led by quarterback Matthew Stafford has been sufficiently answered. Although it’s been just three games, the veteran quarterback has thrown 66 of 94 passes for 942 yards. nine touchdowns and just one interception.
In each of the Rams’ first three NFL contests, he has not had the benefit of a 100 yards rusher. He hasn’t had the benefit of a shutout. In fact, in one game, he even had to lead the LA Rams in a come-from-behind victory.
The LA Rams are 3-0. The LA Rams just defeated three consecutive 2020 NFL Playoff teams and did so in such a way that there was no doubt that the better team emerged victoriously. Wide receiver Cooper Kupp has caught 25 of 33 passes for 367 yards and five touchdowns. The LA Rams finally found a way to connect DeSean Jackson with Stafford, already at five of seven passing for 141 yards and a touchdown. And the Rams have touchdowns with Van Jefferson, Robert Woods, and Tyler Higbee as well.
In just three games, folks.
This was supposed to be an awkward phase of gaining familiarity. The LA Rams faced three playoff teams out of the gates, teams that at the start of this season many expected to defeat the LA Rams at least once. Suddenly, at 3-0, these LA Rams appear to be very much in the discussion for a potential Super Bowl appearance. That should get Matthew Stafford’s name into the NFL’s MVP discussion.
He’s certainly deserving of the honor.
Matthew Stafford is in a new city, new team, new offense, and new coaching staff, and he’s already lighting it up like a guy who had played for the Rams for years. He appears to have broken Rams QB Kurt Warner’s mark at starting 3-0 with an unofficial total of 930 yards, nine touchdowns, and just one interception. Warner’s 3-0 start was good for 888 yards passing.
Is there more to come? I think so. Buckle up, and enjoy the ride.
