Something about the LA Rams offense throwing the long ball

Stafford slings spacious passes
The LA Rams made the decision to make a change at quarterback almost as soon as the 2020 NFL season ended. Curiously, Detroit Lions veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford was requesting a trade at the same time. Stafford loves the deep ball and can sling spacious passes. But could he do so for the LA Rams?
If so, he would be the answer that the Rams organization was looking for. The more that the Rams vetted Stafford, the more he seemed to fit their ideal quarterback profile. And so, the Rams pulled the trigger on a deal that sent playoff winning quarterback Jared Goff, a 2021 third-round draft pick, a 2022 first-round draft pick, and a 2023 first-round draft pick to the Detroit Lions in exchange for Stafford.
So far, Stafford has been better than the brochure. He is on pace to have a career-best season. That’s a pretty lofty mark for a quarterback who has carved up defenses for the past 12 seasons. How good is he this year?
Rams have scored 6 TDs through two weeks. All on long fields. Shortest TD drive has been 70 yards. Average has been 76.5.

61 total points is impressive, but even more so in the context of long fields, time of possession deficits, and trailing for only 2:03 of the season so far.
The Rams offense was built to push the ball downfield. Despite the tried and failed attempt to get the speedy wide receiver, Brandin Cooks, involved in this offense, the Rams need the deep pass to be dominant. The Rams have speed enough in Cooper Kupp, Robert Woods, and Van Jefferson. They added the afterburners when they added DeSean Jackson and Tutu Atwell.
The Rams have a quarterback now who can complete that long pass. Well, it took Stafford three attempts to finally connect with wide receiver DeSean Jackson in Week 3. But he finally did connect, and what a play it was. The Rams scored on a 75-yard touchdown strike that needed less than one minute to put seven points on the scoreboard.
In three games, Matthew Stafford has thrown 942 yards, nine touchdowns, and one interception. That’s in just three games in a 17 game season. At his current pace, he will throw for 5,338 yards, 51 touchdowns, and five interceptions. That’s pretty impressive stuff.

I guess that’s what is so special about the LA Rams throwing the long ball once more.
